What is World Wind Turbine Map?

World Wind Turbine Map is a free, interactive map for exploring wind turbines based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) worldwide, merged with several national wind turbine registers for higher accuracy where they're available - see below for the full list of sources.

You can use it to discover turbines and wind farms near a location, explore the global distribution of wind energy, or inspect available turbine attributes such as manufacturer, model, rated power, hub height, rotor diameter, and operator. For more technical work, you can download the turbines currently visible on the map or the complete global dataset in several formats for your own analysis.

Attribute availability and data quality vary by region and by which of these sources a given turbine comes from - see below.

Where does the turbine data come from?

Turbine locations and attributes come from several sources:

When a turbine from one of the national registers above and an OSM turbine represent the same physical wind turbine (matched by location, within about 100 meters), the register record is shown and the matching OSM entry is hidden, since these registers are treated as higher-quality sources than volunteer-mapped OSM data for turbines in their respective countries. Every turbine's information box states which of these sources its data comes from, with a link back to that source's own record - see below.

Data source distribution
Source Turbines Turbines shown Share
OpenStreetMap (global) 478,210 342,487 69%
MaStR (Germany) 42,986 39,920 8%
USWTDB (United States) 77,839 77,839 16%
Vindbrukskollen (Sweden) 10,996 10,743 2%
Energistyrelsen (Denmark) 4,952 4,858 1%
Géorisques (France) 13,682 13,558 3%
CanWTD (Canada) 7,841 7,813 2%

Turbines is each source's raw record count before deduplication. OpenStreetMap's Turbines shown count is lower because turbines matched to a national register are suppressed there in favor of the register's own record; MaStR, Vindbrukskollen, Energistyrelsen, Géorisques, and CanWTD raw counts also include decommissioned records, which are never shown on the map.

How often is the data updated?

Each data source is checked independently, on its own schedule, so different sources may reflect data from different points in time. The table below shows when each source was last checked for updates.

Per-source last check
Source Last checked
OpenStreetMap Thu, 22 Oct 2026 03:20:29 GMT
MaStR Thu, 22 Oct 2026 03:54:07 GMT
USWTDB Wed, 21 Oct 2026 03:26:26 GMT
Vindbrukskollen Thu, 22 Oct 2026 03:28:48 GMT
Energistyrelsen Thu, 22 Oct 2026 03:39:30 GMT
Géorisques Wed, 21 Oct 2026 03:48:56 GMT
CanWTD Tue, 20 Oct 2026 03:54:52 GMT

Combined dataset last built: Thu, 22 Oct 2026 04:49:19 GMT. This is when the individual sources were last merged together and published to the map. It only happens if any source has new data and not necessarily after every check.

How many wind turbines are shown on the map?

The current worldwide dataset shows 479,080 wind turbines that are operating, or assumed to be operating. Most turbines (every OSM-sourced turbine, every USWTDB-sourced turbine, plus any MaStR-sourced one whose status couldn't be determined) carry no regular status information, and are assumed to still be operating unless a source explicitly states otherwise.

The map additionally shows 3,296 approved wind turbines that have been permitted but are not yet built, sourced from Sweden's Vindbrukskollen register.

The map additionally shows 14,842 planned wind turbines that are not yet built, sourced from Germany's MaStR register, France's Géorisques register, and the "under processing" / "under appeal" Vindbrukskollen layers.

In total, 497,218 wind turbines (operating, planned and approved) are shown on the map.

A further 3,565 register-sourced turbines (currently from MaStR, Vindbrukskollen, Energistyrelsen, Géorisques, and CanWTD) are known to be decommissioned and are therefore excluded from the map entirely, along with any OSM entry at the same location.

The total number is also shown at the bottom right of the map. The same panel also shows how many turbines are currently visible in your map view. This number changes as you pan or zoom the map.

Which data is shown on the map?

The map combines every source listed above - OpenStreetMap plus the German, US, Swedish, Danish, French, and Canadian registers - into one dataset, with each real-world turbine shown only once even where multiple sources describe it.

Whichever source a turbine comes from, its information box shows the same standardized set of fields (manufacturer, model, operator, name, rated power, diameter, hub height, and - where available - status), normalized to consistent names and units rather than each source's own raw field names. It also always shows a Source row naming the dataset the shown data comes from, with a link back to that source's own record - and, for a turbine that replaced a matched OSM entry, a further link to that original (now-hidden) OSM entry too.

The sections below list the underlying field(s) each source provides for every attribute, and any source-specific quirks worth knowing.

OpenStreetMap

Sourced from individual node and way features tagged generator:source=wind worldwide. OSM wind-farm relations are used only to fill missing shared metadata for their member turbines; a relation is never displayed as a turbine.

Attributes displayed for an OpenStreetMap-sourced turbine
Attribute OSM Tag Notes
Operator operator Typically the local turbine operator; may be inherited by parent wind farm relation
Name name Typically the local turbine name; may be inherited by parent wind farm relation
Manufacturer manufacturer Typically the OEM
Model model or manufacturer:type Falls back to the older manufacturer:type tag if model is empty
Rated power generator:output:electricity Normalized to kW; shown as-is with a "unit unclear" note if the value can't be parsed reliably
Diameter rotor:diameter Normalized to meters; shown as-is with a "unit unclear" note if the value can't be parsed reliably
Hub height height:hub or height Normalized to meters; if only total/tip height is tagged, hub height is estimated as height minus half the rotor diameter, or used as-is if diameter is unknown
Start date start_date Used directly when set on the turbine; may be inherited by parent wind farm relation
Status n/a Not tracked; assumed operating

OpenStreetMap features can carry many other tags beyond this list (for example construction dates, data sources, or Wikidata links). Those additional tags are not shown, but they can be viewed directly in OpenStreetMap via the view/edit in OpenStreetMap link.

The Available column above shows what share of all turbines shown on the map (OSM-, MaStR-, USWTDB-, Vindbrukskollen-, Energistyrelsen-, and Géorisques-sourced together) have a value for that attribute. Status is only ever populated for MaStR-, Vindbrukskollen-, Energistyrelsen-, and Géorisques-sourced turbines (see above). If you think you can provide missing information for an OSM-sourced turbine, see below.

Can I share a map view with someone else?

Yes. Use the Share button to create and copy a link to your current map view. Anyone who opens the link will see the same map location, zoom level, and selected map style, whether it's the standard map, satellite imagery, topographic, or minimal view.

You can also share one specific turbine. Select it on the map and use the Share turbine button at the bottom of its information box. The copied link carries that turbine along with the map view, so whoever opens it arrives at the same place with that turbine's information box already open. The Share button described above behaves the same way while an information box is open.

Can I download the turbine data and what can I use it for?

Yes. Use the download button on the map to export either the turbines currently visible in the map view or the complete global dataset.

Exports are available in several formats:

Each turbine includes its coordinates and the standardized attributes available for that record, such as manufacturer, model, operator, name, rated power, rotor diameter, hub height, commissioning date and status.

Every turbine also carries a source field identifying the underlying dataset it came from (OpenStreetMap or one of the national registers) and an id containing that source's original record identifier, such as an OSM node/way ID, MaStR MaStRNummer or USWTDB case_id. Where a register-sourced turbine replaces a matched OpenStreetMap entry, the original OSM ID is retained as well, allowing the record to be traced back to its source even if that OSM turbine is no longer displayed on the map.

The exported data can be used for exploration, research, geographic analysis, data-quality checks and visualisation, as well as other applications permitted by the Data Licence & Terms. If you publish, redistribute or build products using the dataset or extracts from it, please also follow the attribution requirements.

The dataset is not a certified turbine register and may be incomplete, inaccurate or outdated. It should not be used as the sole basis for safety-critical, regulatory, contractual, navigation, aviation, investment or operational decisions.

Can I use this data for my own project?

Yes. We merge all of our sources (see above) into a single combined dataset, the "Merged Global Wind Turbine Dataset by ventodyne", which we make available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. You may use, copy, modify, and share it, including for commercial purposes, subject to the ODbL and a required attribution statement naming ventodyne and every upstream source.

See the Data Licence & Terms for the exact attribution wording you must include, as well as the original licensing terms of each upstream source. The website, its design, application code, data pipeline, and ventodyne branding are not covered by the ODbL or any of these upstream data licences.

If World Wind Turbine Map is useful to you beyond the required data attribution, we also appreciate a link, acknowledgement, or recommendation to others who may benefit from it.

I miss a turbine or found one with incomplete details. How do I fix it?

Check the Source field in the turbine's information box first - how to fix a turbine depends on which source (see above) it comes from.

If the source is OpenStreetMap, use the view/edit in OpenStreetMap link in the information box to open the turbine in OpenStreetMap. There you can update the information yourself, or use OpenStreetMap's community channels if you need help. Once an edit is published in OSM, it should appear here after OSM's next refresh (see above for the current schedule).

If the source is one of the national registers (see above for the current list), this map cannot accept corrections directly - it only shows a periodic snapshot of that register. Use the link to the source's own record in the information box to check the original data, and follow that register's own channels for reporting an error there. Any correction made at the source will appear here after that register's next refresh (see above).

Is the turbine data accurate and complete?

The map is designed to make wind turbine data from OpenStreetMap and several national registers (see above) easy to explore, but coverage, positional accuracy, and attribute completeness vary by location and by source. Data can be incomplete, outdated, incorrectly tagged, or contain errors.

Do not use this map or its exports as the sole basis for safety-critical, regulatory, contractual, navigation, aviation, investment, or operational decisions. Verify important information against authoritative sources.

How can I support this project?

World Wind Turbine Map is free to use and is built on data contributed by the OpenStreetMap community, merged with several national wind turbine registers (see above). There are several ways you can help:

When you reuse OpenStreetMap data, please also comply with the applicable OpenStreetMap attribution and ODbL requirements.

Who operates this website?

World Wind Turbine Map is operated by ventodyne GmbH, a Munich-based company working on wind farm SCADA diagnostics and wake-steering wind farm control solutions.

Contact and company details are available in the Impressum.

Is this website free to use?

Yes. Viewing the map and downloading either the turbines currently visible on the map or the complete global dataset in CSV, Excel, GeoJSON, or KML format are free and do not require registration or an account.
